WENATCHEE VALLEY BIKE TO WORK DAY – GET OUT and RIDE!
Friday, April 16, 2010 at 1:51PM National Bike to Work Day is Friday, May 21st! If you aren’t already bike commuting in Wenatchee Valley, this is a great time to get started! The Wenatchee Valley Transportation Council’s Regional Bicycle Advisory Board, VELO Club, and volunteers will provide refreshments for bicyclists in the Valley that check in at two separate locations on May 21st. Also, leading up to this event will be the Criterion Ride, Junior Ridge to River, and Ride of Silence!
Refreshment stations will be located at 9th Street NE and the Loop Trail in East Wenatchee and 5th Street and the Loop Trail in Wenatchee, so stop by on your way to work for coffee, juice, fruit and pastries, get counted as a biker and maybe join one of the Valley’s bike or pedestrian advocacy groups!

My favorite bike commute is on the bus from Leavenworth to Maiden Lane and then I jump on my Mountain Bike, head up Horse Lake Road and through the foothills to the office. Sweet!
I have a wonderfully short bike commute to work at Anjou Bakery of about 2 miles, each way. Quite refreshing in the early hours and I know I can eat a Black Bottom Cupcake for my snack! As long as it's above 32 degrees F, the cold, wind, nor darkness bother me, but I do put the bike away when it snows or downpours. I've seen many beautiful birds in the morning lately...ospreys out hunting, a Great Horned Owl on top of a telephone post by Carey Corner, a baby quail that fell out of a pear tree in bloom.
I have to bike on Hwy. 2 from Cotlets Way to Old Monitor Rd. In the morning dark, I wear my reflective vest ($15 at Stan's Merry Mart) and reflective pant leg wraps; not to mention my head light and flashing brake light. If I want more exercise, I return on the steep back dirt road taking Bardin James Rd., via Kelly Rd. to Riverfront Dr. in Cashmere. Of course, that won't be possible once the Old Monitor Bridge gets closed from June - December 2010.
Anjou Bakery is very supportive of cyclists. We've got two large bike racks, two air pumps and bike supplies for sale should the need arise. I'm constantly alert to traffic, follow all the rules of the road and attempt to be as visible as I can, since Jill Spanjer was killed on the highway on June 24, 2004.
My bike is equipped with a rack, so when I'm ready to take home a bucket of coffee grinds for my garden, I bungee on a Darigold crate to the back. I'm quite a sight with my loaf of bread, yellow jacket and compost for the garden.
Take a chance and bike to work at least one day this month! You'll love it!
I"m going to use my persuasive mom powers to coax my son to ride his bike to Osborne Elementary where he can catch the bus to Peshastin Dryden. I'll continue on to Sleeping Lady and then swing back by and pick him up for our joint pedal home. Wish me luck! Hopefully he bites.
I bike to work every day but the loop is off my path. I'd like to stop by and enjoy the solidarity, but on the early side. What time will you be there?
Rachel where do you ride? We will be intersecting the loop in a couple of spots but will have a few other locations throughout Wenatchee.
